Summary

In acclaimed graphic novelist Tom Gauld's first picture book for children, a little wooden robot embarks on a quest to find his missing sister-- making for a memorable contemporary bedtime story。

For years, the king and queen tried desperately to have a baby。 Their wish was twice granted when an engineer and a witch gave them a little wooden robot and an enchanted log princess。 There's just one catch, every night when the log princess sleeps, she transforms back into an ordinary log。 She can only be woken with the magic words Awake, little log, awake。

The two are inseparable until one day when the sleeping log princess is accidentally carted off to parts unknown。 Now it's up to her devoted brother to find her and return her safely to the kingdom。 They need to take turns to get each other home, and on the way, they face a host of adventures involving the Queen of Mushrooms, a magic pudding, a baby in a rosebush, and an old lady in a bottle。

This is acclaimed graphic novelist Tom Gauld's first picture book for children, inspired by a bedtime story he made up for his daughter。 In his words, I was trying to make a book inspired by three different sets of books: The books that I remember enjoying as a child, the books that I watched my daughters enjoying, and the books I enjoy now as an adult。 I wanted the book to have its own quirky feeling but also to function like a classic bedtime story。

Awww! Loved every minute of this, maybe, especially, the adventures that are only hinted at--hoping Gauld will write those too someday。 Evocative, witty, with unique illustrations you can pore over forever。

This is a unique picture book with a new fairy tale and beautiful illustrations。 Great for preschoolers and older。 Would be a great lap read, I can imagine children wanting it read over and over again。

The kind of "happily-ever-after" that melted my heart through and through :’) A beautifully illustrated piece of storytelling about siblinghood and what it means to love and look out for one another。 The kind of "happily-ever-after" that melted my heart through and through :’) A beautifully illustrated piece of storytelling about siblinghood and what it means to love and look out for one another。 。。。more

The sort of nonsensical fairy tale for which I have little patience but believe will probably appeal greatly to children。 Forced to re-read it over and over to an enthusiastic little fan, I could see it growing on me, perhaps。

Nothing awful or terribly offensive, but kind of dumb and pointless。

I read a book today: THE LITTLE WOODEN ROBOT AND THE LOG PRINCESS by @tomgauld How refreshing to read a story about brother-sisterly affection。 It’s chiseled a totem of sincere sibling love into my heart。 So sweet! My favorite part are the mini-adventures each sibling goes through which not only reinforces their commitment to each other but also builds up the climax exponentially。 The story telling voice matched the medieval-styled illustrations to a tee! My biggest takeaway as an author-illustrator was with the page design。 Have fun and think outside the box。 Tom Gauld took the comic-strip design and completely made it his own, thinking outside the box within boxes, and outside the boxes…using the style to further enhance the story, weaving word and picture into single purpose。 And then the ending (no spoiler here)…so sweet! Absolutely loved this book! #picturebookdesign #picturebookstyle #picturebookvoice #comicstrip #fairytale 。。。more

How imaginative。 The cool thing is that characters normally seen as “evil,” like the witch and the goblin, aren’t villains in this story。 In fact, they’re part of the kingdom。 I would totally like to see the separate adventures the title characters had turned to spin-offs。 😄

A quirky, irrepressibly charming, thoroughly delightful modern fairy tale guaranteed to make you smile。

BEST PICTURE BOOK OF 2021!

What a fabulous picture book! We checked this one out because we fell in life with one of the author's graphic novels and then one of his comic books。 We love his art style and quirky sense of humor。 This picture book doesn't have the subtle humor, but the story is really engaging and the art is right up there。 My son interacted with the text, playing what if。。。, when things happened。 Like, "what if it's the wrong log? He should have checked first。。。 " This was really a fun one。 What a fabulous picture book! Tom Gauld's cartoons in The Guardian and New Scientists are well known to me as hilarious commentary on the book and scientific fields (in the respective news media)。 So reading a Gauld tale longer than a standard comic panel aimed at younger children is a different experience。 Can his art and storytelling abilities still be interesting。 For me, the answer is yes。The book is a fairy tale about a King and Queen who, lacking children, decide to go and make some。 The Wooden Robot was created by the Tom Gauld's cartoons in The Guardian and New Scientists are well known to me as hilarious commentary on the book and scientific fields (in the respective news media)。 So reading a Gauld tale longer than a standard comic panel aimed at younger children is a different experience。 Can his art and storytelling abilities still be interesting。 For me, the answer is yes。The book is a fairy tale about a King and Queen who, lacking children, decide to go and make some。 The Wooden Robot was created by the royal inventor, the Log Princess by a clever old witch。 And they were happy together。 The Log Princess turns back into a log when she goes to sleep and turns back when awaken with some magic words, which the Wooden Robot does each morning。But one morning, the Wooden Robot was distracted, and before he could say the magic words, the Log Princess (in the form of a log) was accidentally discarded。 Thus starts the adventures of the Wooden Robot to rescue the Log Princess and then return to the Kingdom。 Which, of course, they do, with the help of some little friends。The story is simple, the adventure is mostly linear (with some quick diversions caused by other adventures) but Gauld's intricate yet simple art holds it all together, together with more words than he usually uses in his weekly comics。 Little Ones (and adults) who re-read the story will probably keep finding new things in the art。All in all, a good first outing for Gauld in the field of art and fairy tale storytelling。 Hopefully, there can be more in the future。 。。。more

This whole fairy tale revolves around kindness and teamwork。 The Queen and King work together to solve their fertility woes, the Wooden Robot and the Log Princess work together to get home, the Beetles work together with the forest creatures to reach the witch: is there a better fairy tale that beats this particular horse? The story is perfect, the illustrations are like tumbling into a wonderland of carved wood engraved glory。 The protagonists and the action are absolutely enough to engage a reader (of any age, really) but the illustrations。 A child could get lost in every page。 Each illustration with its impossibly rich variety makes Where's Waldo pale in comparison。 This needs to be in your library。 The story is perfect, the illustrations are like tumbling into a wonderland of carved wood engraved glory。 The protagonists and the action are absolutely enough to engage a reader (of any age, really) but the illustrations。 A child could get lost in every page。 Each illustration with its impossibly rich variety makes Where's Waldo pale in comparison。 This needs to be in your library。 。。。more

A beautiful book both in story and illustration。 My favourite stories as a child had illustrations just like this, with lots of hidden things to find in intricate artwork。 My favourite pages are the inventor and witch pages, and also the map of the kingdom when Robot sets sail :-) so gorgeous and wonderful <3

An eccentric but charming little story with a fairytale/cartoon vibe。 Definitely too long and involved for my preschool storytime groups, but I think a bit older would enjoy it (and older siblings who are listening in!)。 I liked how so many of the small details came together in the end and ended up being important--also the montage of "adventures" the robot and the princess go on (especially "The Baby in the Rosebush" made me laugh out loud, haha)。 An eccentric but charming little story with a fairytale/cartoon vibe。 Definitely too long and involved for my preschool storytime groups, but I think a bit older would enjoy it (and older siblings who are listening in!)。 I liked how so many of the small details came together in the end and ended up being important--also the montage of "adventures" the robot and the princess go on (especially "The Baby in the Rosebush" made me laugh out loud, haha)。 。。。more
